Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA developed an artificial liver that could be transplanted into mice and allow them to metabolize drugs as if they are humans beings. It could result into more accurate and efficient drug testing.

To create this artificial liver, researchers cultured human liver cells, called hepatocytes, in a controlled environment with other factors, such as mouse skin cells.

Afterwards scientists implanted the liver under the skin or inside the body cavity of mice and recreated many of the functions of a human liver.
