India's best known tiger conservationist Fateh Singh Rathore died of cancer on 1 March 2011. Also known as the Tiger Man, Rathore was the first conservation-epoch for Ranthambhore Tiger Park.
Fateh Singh Rathore who had joined Indian Forest Service in 1960 first reached Ranthambhore in 1971 and became part of the pioneering efforts at international level to save the species of tiger through Project Tiger. Rathore who was also referred to as Fatji was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award in Conservation by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). Fateh Singh had also received the International Valour Award for bravery in conservation in 1983.
