A week long international workshop on disaster prevention, “Disaster Prevention and People: Working towards the Creation of a Strong Society” was organised in Japan by the Japan Foundation under the Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths (JENESYS) Programme in July 2010. The workshop was attended by participants from 13 countries. A two-member team of the Jaipur-based Centre for Community Economics and Development Consultants' Society attended the workshop from India. In the workshop, it was shown how in Japan the research agencies not only focus on capacity building of the local government but also lay equal emphasis on information sharing with stakeholders and community-based hazard mapping.
