The Special Investigation team decided to seek the Supreme Court's guidance on Kodnani death penalty issue in Gujarat.

The Special Investigation team in the third week of May 2013 decided to seek the Supreme Court's guidance on Kodnani death penalty issue in Gujarat. The decision comes after the reported U-turn by the Gujarat Government on the death penalty for former minister Maya Kodnani and nine others, convicted in 2002 Naroda Patiya riot case in which 96 people were killed.

The team will file an application before the special bench of the Supreme Court apprising it about the recent Gujarat Government's decision to withdraw the sanction for filing appeal in the Naroda Patiya case.

Maya Kodnani was a Member of Legislative assembly from Naroda constituency in Gujarat for its 12th legislative assembly and a former Minister for Women and Child Development of Gujarat. She is the first female and first MLA to be convicted in a post-Godhra riots case. Godhra riots took place in 2002.
