ISRO has taken a big step towards self-reliance in the space sector. On February 13, 2025, ISRO announced the successful creation of a 10-tonne Vertical Planetary Mixer, the world's largest for solid propellants.
This cutting-edge machinery was developed and manufactured in association with Bengaluru's Central Manufacturing Technology Institute (CMTI). This development is expected to improve solid rocket motor manufacturing.
How will it Help in Space Transportation?
India’s space transportation systems require powerful propulsion. Solid rocket motors need a precise blend of delicate and hazardous materials. The new vertical mixer will make this process safer and more efficient. Improved mixing will lead to better-quality propellants, essential for successful space missions.
Features and Specifications of the Vertical Mixer
- Weight: 150 tons
- Dimensions: 5.4 meters (length), 3.3 meters (width), 8.7 meters (height)
- Agitators: Powered by hydrostatics
- Control System: PLC-based system linked to SCADA stations for remote operation
- Technology: Ensures precision in the mixing process, crucial for solid propellant production
Collaborative Development and Testing
The project was developed by the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) and CMTI, with support from academia and industry experts. The mixer has successfully passed factory-level tests, proving its efficiency. This collaboration highlights India's commitment to advancing space technology.
