Prime Minister of China Wen Jiabao and Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama on 31 May2010 at Tokyo summit agreed to set up a civilian hotline to address bilateral issues between them. At the summit, the two leaders also agreed to start negotiations to develop oil and gas resources at the East China Sea. Civilian hotline means that direct telephone link will be used between the highest political levels of the two nations. The recent development assumes significance because recently there was tension between the two nations over separate interpretations of exclusive zones in the East China Sea. Besides, there was also tension between the navies of Japan and China.
