Jayalalithaa launched Amma Salt

Jayalalithaa, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, on 11 June 2014 launched Amma Salt as a part of social welfare scheme in the state.  

Amma Salt is manufactured by Tamil Nadu Salt Corporation limited (TNSC) under the State Industries Department. It will be available in three variants namely double fortified, refined free flow iodised and low sodium.

Apart from this, Jayalalitha also inaugurated a new building for Tamil Nadu Police CB-CID headquarters in Chennai.

Earlier, the Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, under the social welfare scheme, had also launched Amma Canteens and Amma Water.


Amma Canteens low-cost (subsidised) food canteens that offers food at minimal cost. These canteens are set up at the Government Hospital Campus and near economically backward area. The Amma canteen uses the services of women self-help groups in the State.

About Tamil Nadu Salt Corporation limited (TNSC)

Tamil Nadu Salt Corporation limited (TNSC) is a fully owned enterprise of the Tamil Nadu government. It was established in 1974 at Valinokkam in Ramanathapuram District, Tamil Nadu. TNSC cultivates salt in an area of 5524 acres of land and the project is called Mariyur Valinokkam Salt complex (MVSC). It has a capacity to produce 2 to 2.5 lakhs tones per annum by developing around 3200 acres of land and providing employment to 1200 of workers on direct/indirect system.
