Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led central government approved eight railway projects worth approximately Rs. 24,657 crore on August 9. This decision was approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Modi.
Fourteen districts across seven states including Odisha, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Telangana, and West Bengal, will benefit from these projects.

The cabinet committee has passed the following new routes for railways, thus connecting these districts to the vast railway network of the country:

How New Railway Projects Will Benefit the Public?
- Improved Connectivity: These new rail routes aim to connect areas that were previously not linked by train. This will make transportation more efficient and accessible in those areas.
- Economic Growth: The projects will boost economic activity in the connected regions by creating a smoother supply chain.
- Job Creation: The construction phase of the project is expected to generate around three crore direct employment. This will benefit the local economy to bloom.
- Environmental Impact: The projects will help reduce oil imports by 32.20 crore liters and cut CO2 emissions by 0.87 million tonnes, which is like planting 3.5 crore trees.
- Supports National Plan: The expansion aligns with the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan, which aims for better multi-modal connectivity through integrated planning.
What is PM Gati Shakti Master Plan?
PM Gati Shakti Master Plan is PM Modi’s dream project of every Ministry working in coordination with each other.
PM Modi launched the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan in October 2021. This project aims to improve infrastructure planning and construction in India. As per the plan, a total of 16 ministries coordinate their efforts while working on the master plan.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that these new railway projects align with PM Modi’s Vision of ‘New India.’ The goal is to make each region and its people more self-reliant ("Atmanirbhar"). With improved connectivity from these new routes, areas that were previously hard to reach will now be integrated into India’s growing economy.
