Counting of votes begins in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh, BJP and Congress fate on the line

The counting of votes for Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections started early morning at 8 am on 18 December 2017. The results will be announced today itself.

In total, 182 seats in Gujarat and 68 seats in Himachal Pradesh are up for elections. While in Gujarat, the polling was held in two phases on 9 and 14 December, Himachal Pradesh

went to polls in a single phase on 9 November.
In Gujarat, the counting is taking place at 37 centres amidst tight security. Over 68 per cent polling was recorded in the two-phase elections. The total voter turnout this time saw a 2 per cent dip, as compared to the 2012 polls when 71 per cent polling was registered.

In Himachal Pradesh, the counting for all 68 assembly seats is being held at 42 centres. Around 2,820 officers including 940 micro-observers have been deployed for the purpose. The counting is being supervised by 68 returning officers, one in every constituency.

The results of these elections are expected to have an effect on the 2019 parliamentary elections as well.

Sushil Kumar, Sakshi Malik win gold at Commonwealth Wrestling Championships

Indian freestyle wrestler, Sushil Kumar clinched the gold medal at the Commonwealth Wrestling Championships, which were held in South Africa on 17 December 2017.

The double Olympic medallist, who returned to international wrestling after more than three years, defeated New Zealand’s Akash Khullar with a pinfall in the final of the 74kg freestyle category to clinch the top medal. It was his first medal in international wrestling since his gold medal in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.India’s Parveen Rana also won a bronze medal in the same category.

Rio Olympic medallist, Sakshi Malik also won the gold medal in the championships. She defeated New Zealand's Tayla Tuahine Ford by a score of 13-2 in the final of the 62kg women's freestyle category.

Representation of the People (Amendment) Bill to be introduced in Lok Sabha

The Representation of the People (Amendment) Bill, 2017 is scheduled to be introduced in the Lok Sabha on18 December 2017.

Besides this, other bills that would be taken up for discussion in the Lower House include The National Council for Teacher Education (Amendment) Bill, The Payment of Gratuity (Amendment) Bill, The Dentists (Amendment) Bill, The Indian Forest (Amendment) Bill, The Repealing and Amending Bill, The Central Road Fund (Amendment) Bill and The Requisitioning and Acquisition of Immovable Property (Amendment) Bill.

Rajya Sabha, the upper house, on the other hand, is scheduled to take up The Companies (Amendment) Bill, The Indian Institutes of Management Bill, and The Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy Bill.
