In its effort to prevent the ongoing illegal sex-determination test, which in turn leads to female foeticide in the state, the Madhya Pradesh government on 27 August 2011 announced a reward of 10000 rupees for those who inform the state administration about such activities. The decision to this effect was taken in the backdrop of the alarming sex-ratio in Chambal region.
Apart from controlling female foeticide, the state police will also be vigilant to check female infanticide in the state. The government stated that rewarding informers would encourage the common man’s participation in controlling such evils in the society.
Government schemes like Ladli Lakshmi Yojna, Janani Suraksha, Mukhayamantri Kanyadan Yojna are some of the measures to improve the status of women in the country. Sex determination and female foeticide is banned in India. A fine of Rs 5 lakh and imprisonment of upto 7 years can be granted for such illegal acts.
