Nobel Peace Prize 2024 Awarded to Japanese Organisation of Hiroshima and Nagasaki Attack Survivors

The Nobel Peace Prize 2024 has been announced today on October 11. This year’s Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to the Japanese organization Nihon Hidankyo "for its efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons and for demonstrating through witness testimony that nuclear weapons must never be used again." The award given to the organizaition can be viewed as the committee recognizing the survivors of the nuclear attack at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. 

The Nobel committee at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced this on Friday. There were a total of 286 nominees for the Nobel Peace Prize.

What is Nihon Hidankyo?

Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organizations was founded in 1956 by victims of nuclear weapons tests in the Pacific and local Hibakusha associations. Later, this name was shortened to Nihon Hidankyo in Japanese, and it developed into the biggest and most powerful Hibakusha organization in Japan.

Nihon Hindankyo’s Conrtibution to World Peace

Nihon Hidankyo is a group of atomic bomb survivors. By sharing their personal stories, creating educational campaigns based on their experiences, and delivering strong warnings about the development and deployment of nuclear weapons, they have played a crucial role in making the world understand how destructing a nuclear war can be. By this they are establishing and bolstering international resistance to nuclear weapons.

According to the Norwegian Nobel Committee, there hasn't been a nuclear bomb deployed in combat in almost 80 years. Alfred Nobel's will was a major factor in the choice to give Nihon Hidankyo the Nobel Peace Prize for 2024. They also stated that Alfred Nobel's intention to honor initiatives that bring the greatest good to humanity is embodied in the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize.

Nobel Peace Prize is Given By

The Norwegian Nobel Committee is in charge of choosing the recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize as well as qualifying applicants. The Norwegian parliament, the Storting, appoints five members to the Committee. 

In contrast to the Nobel Prizes in Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature, and Economic Sciences, which are given out in Stockholm, Sweden, the Nobel Peace Prize is given out in Oslo, Norway.
