Osama bin Laden, the mastermind behind the 11 September 2001, terror attacks was slain on 1 May 2011 in his luxury hideout in Pakistan in a firefight with U.S. forces. President Barack Obama broke the news in the White House on 1 May. Upon receiving the news Americans gathered to celebrate at ground zero in New York where the twin towers that once stood as symbols of American economic power were brought down by bin Laden's hijackers 10 years ago.
Bin Laden was killed after a gunbattle with Navy SEALs and CIA paramilitary forces at a compound in the city of Abbottabad in Pakistan. He was shot in the left eye and killed inside a secured private residential compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, by U.S. Navy SEALs in a covert operation authorized by U.S. President Barack Obama. Abbottabad is home to three Pakistan army regiments and thousands of military personnel and is dotted with military buildings.
The team returned to Afghanistan with bin Laden's body, U.S. officials said and the body later buried at sea.
Osama bin Mohammed bin Awad bin Laden was born on 10 March 1957 was the founder of al-Qaeda, responsible for the September 11 attacks on the United States and numerous other mass-casualty attacks against civilian and military targets. He was a member of the wealthy Saudi bin Laden family.
Bin Laden was on the American Federal Bureau of Investigation's lists of Ten Most Wanted Fugitives and Most Wanted Terrorists for his involvement in the 1998 U.S. embassy bombings.
