Public Protests in Bahrain intensified during the third week of February 2011 with the famous Pearl Roundabout becoming a visible symbol of revolt against the incumbent ruler King Hamad bin Issa al-Khalifa of Sunni royalty class. Majority of the people in Bahrain belongs to Shia community. In spite of its small size, Bahrain is considered important in international geopolitics. Besides being home to the American navy’s fifth fleet, Bahrain is close to the eastern provinces of the kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
At the same time protests also started in Kuwait and Libya against their ruling governments. In Libya, the city of Benghazi became the epicenter of the pro-democracy revolts against its longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi.
