Railway Budget 2011-12: Green Initiatives by Ministry

Mamata Banerjee while presenting the Union Railway Budget 2011 in the Lok Sabha on 25 February 2011 declared 2011-12 as the Year of Green Energy.

Union Minister Mamata Banerjee while presenting the Union Railway Budget 2011 in the Lok Sabha on 25 February 2011 declared 2011-12 as the Year of Green Energy. Considering that railways are always environment friendly and the most fuel efficient mode of transport, certain green measures were adopted by the Ministry of Railways such as:


•    The budget provided for free supply of 14 lakh CFLs to railway households and phasing out of incandescent lamps.
•    Regenerative braking in Mumbai EMUs was proposed.
•    The Railway Budget 2011 also proposed Windmill at ICF, Chennai
•    Production of locos with hotel load converter was included in the budget.
•    The budget proposed increase use of solar energy at LC gates, stations etc.
•    The budget proposed increased use of bio-diesel, CNG and LNG in locos, workshops etc.
