Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd (Visakhapatnam Steel Plant) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Indian Railways in New Delhi on 10 January 2011. The MoU was signed for setting up an axle plant named Uttarbanga RINL RAIL Karkahana Ltd at New Jalpaiguri, West Bengal, at an estimated cost of Rs 278 crore. The plant will manufacture and supply axels for BOX N wagons and others to meet the growing requirement of the Indian Railways. The project will be implemented by forming a 100 per cent subsidiary company of RINL or a joint venture. MECON will be the consultant for the project. The axle plant will produce Box N Wagon Axle – for axle load of 22.9 tonnes currently with a provision for axle load of 25 tonnes with 210 mm diameter of 516 kg weight for 22.9-tonne axle load. The New Jalpaiguri plant will have the facility of forging and heat treatment of about 50000 forged axles a year.
RINL was selected for the axle plant considering its technological strengths in special grades of steel for decades. RINL which is known for the implementation of modern technology is currently adopting latest technology such as RH process, LHF, and EMS for production of high quality cleaner steel in its ongoing expansion project.
