The redevelopment of the seven government colonies in Delhi will lead to an increase the green area coverage by about 3 times from the existing green space area, as per Union Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs.
The government colonies include Nauroji Nagar, Netaji Nagar, Sarojini Nagar, Mohammadpur, Sriniwaspuri, Kasturba Nagar and Thyagaraj Nagar.
The redevelopment of the seven colonies is being done with complete adherence to environmental sustainability and green building concepts and special care and attention is being given towards retaining maximum number of existing trees and incorporating them in a large cluster, as an integral part of landscaping design scheme.
The compensatory plantation of trees will be done in the ratio of 1:10 thereby resulting in enhanced tree coverage area.
Key Highlights
Green Coverage: With the design of multi-storied residential and commercial blocks, the effective ground coverage has drastically reduced, enabling more space for the green area.
The conceptual plan of the seven colonies includes a proposal of green area amounting to about 10, 69,235 sqm as against the existing green space of 3, 83,101 sqm, thereby increasing the green space by about 3 times.
Felling of Trees: All trees will not be cut during the re-development process. Only 14,031 number of trees will be cut out of the existing 21,040 trees.
Moreover, against the 21,040 number of existing trees, 23,475 trees shall be available in these colonies after the re-development process with the saving of 6,834 trees, transplantation of 1,213 trees and new plantation of 15,428 trees.
Compensatory plantation of trees: The compensatory plantation of trees will be carried out in a ratio of 1:10, which means that ten trees will be planted against the loss of one tree.
In total, around 1, 35,460 trees will be planted, creating‘Urban Forest’ thus generating oxygen and reducing the pollution level in the city.
Green Building Concepts: Besides the special efforts for protection, preservation and replantation of trees, the new complexes will be developed according to ‘Green Building Concepts’, zero waste discharge and environmental sustainability through the following measures:
• Restriction of the ground coverage area to 15-20 per cent as against the existing ground coverage of 50 per cent. The green area will now be 50 per cent.
• Plantation and transplantation as a green barrier along the boundary to cover main roads.
• The orientation of houses as per sun path to avoid heat gain in the building and green terraces to mitigate heat gain.
• Usage of solar panels for renewable energy. The total solar power generation in the 7 GPRAs will be 5,654 KW.
• Collection, segregation and in-house treatment of solid waste/ wastewater and its reuse for horticulture purposes and flushing. Solid waste will also be used as manure for horticulture.
• Rainwater harvesting system for recharging the groundwater.
• Usage of recycled material from construction and demolition waste to be used in the construction of structures such as kerb stone and footpath tiles.
The upcoming complexes are being developed by providing green spaces, with lush green trees around the constructed building. An example of the same is the development of New Moti Bagh Complex and East Kidwai Nagar Project.
