The Union cabinet approved the establishment of the Satellite Centre of Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education (PGIMER), Chandigarh at Sangrur, Punjab on 12 February 2014.
The Project would be the part of Scheme of Redevelopment of Hospitals and Institutions undertaken in the 12th Five Year Plan. The project would cost around 449 crore rupees including recurring cost of 161 crore for the first four years.
The Project will reduce the average distance and bring specialized healthcare service within the reach of people of the region.The project also would cater to region specific diseases and will also reduce disease burden on PGIMER, Chandigarh.
Besides, it will help increase hospital bed strength so as to provide health care services to the marginalized classes and also help towards meeting World Health Organisation (WHO) norms.
