Shashikant Sharma, a 1976 batch IAS officer of Bihar cadre on 7 July 2011 was appointed as the new defence secretary succeeding Pradeep Kumar. The position fell vacant after Pradeep Kumar was appointed central vigilance commissioner.
Sharma prior to being appointed as Defence Secretary was serving as the secretary in the department of financial services. He had previously served as director general (acquisition) in Defence Ministry and also as a joint secretary. He had served as Secretary, Information Technology and before that as Additional Secretary, Defence Production.
The Bihar cadre (1976) officer currently serving as the banking secretary will enjoy a term of two years as Defence Secretary.
In another appointment in the Defence Ministry, UP cadre (1977) officer Shekhar Agarwal was appointed as Defence Production Secretary in place of R K Singh who was appointed Home Secretary.
The Defence Secretary is the senior civil servant at the Ministry of Defence. His/Her role is to ensure the MoD operates effectively as a department of the government.
