The West Bengal state government on 21 June 2011 issued a notification to turn the Singur Land Rehabilitation and Development Bill into law following Governor M.K. Narayanan’s assent.
Industry Minister Partha Chatterjee mentioned that the notification would be followed by the framing of rules by a committee, which would determine the process to return an equivalent portion of land to the unwilling farmers of Singur. Their land was acquired by the earlier government for the now abandoned Tata Motors' small car project.

The Singur Land Rehabilitation and Development Act, 2011 came into effect from 20 June 2011 and the land currently stands vested with the state government, free from all encumbrances.
The Singur Bill turned into a law after Governor MK Narayanan signed it on 20 June 2011.
