Sri Lankan government and Sri Lanka’s cricket board SLC decided to stick to their decision of calling back national cricketers currently playing in the IPL by 5 May 2011. SLC’s move may rupture its ties with BCCI. SLC had in early April 2011 ordered the players to return to the country to prepare for the upcoming England tour scheduled to begin on 10 May 2011.
Indian officials had spoken to their Lankan counterparts on the matter and had requested them to let their players play in the Twenty20 event at-least till 15 May 2011. However both Sports Minister Mahindanada Aluthgamage and the Cricket Board (SLC) have decided to ignore the Indian request.
Accordingly some 11 Sri Lankans including the star players Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardena and the newly appointed Sri Lankan captain Tillakaratne Dilshan would have to abide by the Sri Lankan decision and return home leaving IPL half way.
