The Union Cabinet of India, on 22 March 2011, approved the Bureau of Indian Standards (Amendment) Bill, 2011. The objective of the bill is to empower the government to make hallmarking mandatory. The bill will pave the way for introduction of mandatory hallmarking of more products including gold. Presently, almost 77 items including mineral water, milk products and cement are certified with mandatory hallmarking under the BIS Act to conform to the quality of goods and services to consumers.
