The United States on 18 May 2011 imposed sanctions on Syrian President Basher al-Assad and six other top aides for Human rights abuses. It also freezed any assets of the Syrian officials that are in the United States. In addition to Assad, the sanctions targeted Vice President Farouq al-Shara, Interior Minister Mohammad Ibrahim al-Shaar and the Prime Minister Adel Safar.
According to an estimate, 700 civilians were killed in two months of clashes between protesters and government forces. The US imposed these sanctions to pur pressure on Syrian government to stop its brutal crackdown on protesters.
The EU (European Union) also put 13 Syrian officials on its sanctions list in what it described as a move to increase pressure.
