India among top 5 countries in e-waste generation

• India is among the top five e-waste generating countries in the world besides China, the US, Japan and Germany, according to a report released by Assocham and NEC.
• Among states, Maharashtra contributes the largest e-waste of 19.8 percent but recycles only about 47810 tonne per annum (TPA).
• Tamil Nadu generated 13 percent e-waste and recycled about 52427 TPA.

Centre to start measuring green GDP of States

• The government will begin a five-year exercise to compute district-level data of the country’s environmental wealth.
• The results of this study will eventually be used to calculate every State’s ‘green’ Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
• The metric will help in calculating compensation to be paid during land acquisition, calculation of funds required for climate mitigation and so on.

Haryana government to give paternity leave to all male government employees

• Haryana Government has decided to give 15 days paternity leave to all male government employees to take care of the new-born child.
• Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said in Rohtak that the state government has also decided to raise the strength of women in police force from existing 11 percent to 20 percent.
• He said, due to court cases about 13,000 recruitments are held up in education, power and other departments.

Anupam Kher to be given Lifetime Achievement honour at upcoming IIFA

• Veteran film actor Anupam Kher will be given the prestigious Lifetime Achievement honour at the upcoming International Indian Film Academy awards ceremony in Bangkok.
• He will be presented with the honour on June 24 at the 19th edition of IIFA.
• The 63-year-old actor has worked in over 500 films spanning across languages along with projects both in India and abroad for over three decades.

SC allows reservation in promotion to SC/ST employees

• The Supreme Court on June 5, 2018 allowed the Union government to go ahead with reservation in promotion for employees belonging to the SC and ST category in accordance with law.
• The vacation bench comprising Justices Adarsh Kumar Goel and Ashok Bhushan took into account the Centre's submissions that entire process of promotion has come to a standstill due to the orders passed by various high courts and the apex court had also ordered for status quo in a similar matter in 2015.
• The government said there were separate verdicts by the high courts of Delhi, Bombay and Punjab and Haryana on the issue of reservation in promotion to SC/ST employees and the apex court had also passed different orders on appeals filed against those judgement.

Haryana to provide sanitary napkins to girl students at Re 1

• The Haryana government would be providing sanitary napkins at just Re 1 to girl students of government schools starting from August 2018.
• The scheme will cover women belonging to Below Poverty Line (BPL) families too.
• The decision to provide sanitary napkins at Re 1 per packet was taken by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar after a meeting with senior functionaries of school education department and health department.
• The Chief Minister said that girls till the age of 18 years will be provided with the napkins in schools, while those above the age limit will get it through the through Public Distribution System at ration shops every month.
• According to a state survey, only 28 per cent of girls use sanitary napkins while 40 per cent of women use cloth during menstruation, which leads to hygiene issues and diseases. The move will provide huge relief to girls and women.

Saudi Arabia starts issuing driving licenses to women, ending decades-long ban

• Saudi Arabia's General Traffic Directorate has issued first driving licenses to 10 women, about ten months after a royal decree was issued ending the decades-long ban on driving by women.
• The move will allow women across the gulf kingdom to drive cars on their own from June 24, 2018.
• Saudi Arabia was the only country in the world where women were not allowed to drive.
• The General Traffic Department has sought to open and operate driving schools dedicated to women.
• The move is a part of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman's liberalisation drive.

Nipah Virus: Saudi Arabia bans frozen and processed imports from Kerala

• Saudi Arabia has banned frozen and processed fruit and vegetable imports from Kerala amid concerns over the deadly Nipah virus outbreak.
• The Nipah virus itself can cause encephalitis - a dangerous swelling of the brain - and common symptoms vary from none to elevated fevers, cough, headache, shortness of breath and confusion.
• On May 29, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) banned imports from Kerala. UAE officials announced that 100 tonnes of fruit, vegetables and fresh produce that was to be imported from Kerala was prohibited from entry.
• As of date, of the 18 positive cases, 16 have died and the remaining two are recovering well at a Kozhikode hospital while the around 2,000 people, who have reported to have come in contact with the affected, are being monitored.

C18-Mica-4 can remove majority of pollutants from urban waste water: Spanish scientists

• Spanish scientists have identified absorbent materials that can help soak up pollutants found in urban waste water in less than 24 hours.
• Researchers from University of Seville evaluated two types of phyllosilicates. These are a subclass of silicates and include common mineral in very different environments.
• The results show that the material C18-Mica-4 is capable of eliminating the majority of pollutants that were evaluated in urban waste water, as well as surface water and potable water.
 
Air India seeks Rs 1000 crore bank loan to meet its urgent working capital requirement

• National Carrier Air India sought proposals for short-term loans worth one thousand crore rupees to meet its urgent working capital requirements.
• The loan will be drawn in June in one or more tranches. The airline has requested banks to submit their financial bids by 13th of this month.
• The tenure of the loan will be one year (renewable) from the date of availing short-term loans.
