Swedish defence giant collaborates with Adani group for defence manufacturing

Swedish defence giant Saab and Indian conglomerate Adani group announced a collaboration in defense manufacturing on 1 September 2017.

The collaboration, involving billions of dollars of investment, mainly eyes a contract for single- engine fighter jets for the Indian Air Force. The project would include design, development and production of Gripen jets for India, keeping in line with the Make in India initiative. It would also include sharing of technologies of national importance with India.

According to the CEO and President of Saab, Hakan Buskhe, the main objective behind the collaboration is to create a new defence eco- system in India that would involve many partners, vendors and suppliers.

Ahmedabad gets India’s first 'World Heritage City’ tag from UNESCO

The city of Ahmedabad, known as the commercial hub of Gujarat, was on 1 September 2017 formally accorded the status of India’s first ‘World Heritage City’ by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

The honour makes the walled city the first one in India and the third in Asia to feature on the esteemed list. The city was selected for the coveted status out of 250 cities. India is second after China in terms of number of world heritage properties in ASPAC (Asia and Pacific) region and seventh overall.

Ahmedabad, which was founded in the 15th century, is located on the eastern bank of the Sabarmati River. The city comprises 28 Archaeological Survey of India's centrally protected monuments.

Indian-origin Joseph Yuvaraj Pillay appointed as Interim President of Singapore

Indian-origin civil servant Joseph Yuvaraj Pillay was on 1 September 2017 appointed as Interim President of Singapore until the new President is sworn-in. Pillay succeeds Tony Tan Keng Yam who completed a six-year term on 31 August 2017. At present, Pillay is serving as the Chairman of the Council of Presidential Advisers (CPA).

This is not the first time that Pillay will exercise the powers of the President. He has been the acting President every time the president goes on an overseas trip. He acted as President in May 2017, when Tony Tan Keng made state visits to Europe. Pillay has served for more than 60 such stints, the longest of which was 16 days in April and May of 2007, when the then president S R Nathan visited Africa.
