1. (b) Section 497


The Supreme Court of India on September 27, 2018 struck down a 158-year-old penal provision in the Indian Penal Code that made adultery a criminal offence. The decision was taken by a five-judge bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices R F Nariman, A M Khanwilkar, D Y Chandrachud and Indu Malhotra. The bench unanimously held section 497 of the Indian Penal Code, which deals with the offence of adultery, as unconstitutional and arbitrary.

2. (b) Narendra Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on September 26, 2018 awarded with the prestigious UN Champions of the Earth Award 2018, the highest environmental honour of the United Nations. The UN Environment jointly awarded PM Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron in the Policy Leadership category for their efforts regarding the creation of the International Solar Alliance.

The UAE will host the Interfaith Alliance Forum in Abu Dhabi on November 19-20, 2018. The announcement was made during a press conference held at the Ministry of Interior headquarters in Abu Dhabi.

5. (b) Lucknow

The fourth edition of India International Science Festival (IISF) will be inaugurated by President Ram Nath Kovind in Lucknow on October 6, 2018. The IISF-2018 is expected to be attended by around 10000 delegates, including 5000 students, 550 teachers and 200 students from north-east region, besides 20 international delegates and 200 startups.

6. (a) USD 525 million

The New Development Bank (NDB) of the BRICS countries has approved a USD 525 million loan to Madhya Pradesh for infrastructure projects. The loan will be used by the Indian government for on-lending to the Madhya Pradesh government for rehabilitating major district roads with a total length of about 2000 km.

7. (d) India

India will host the Deaf ICC T20 World Cup slated to begin from November 23-30 in Gurugram, the organisers announced September 27, 2018. The eight-day tournament will see participation from over 200 players across eight countries including England, Australia, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, South Africa, apart from India, vying for the top honours.

8. (c) Aizawl

A joint border conference was held between India and Bangladesh in Aizawl on September 27, 2018. During the conference, the delegates from both the sides deliberated on the border issues between the two nations. The Indian delegation was headed by Survey of India Director Sanjay Kumar.

9. (b)  19

The Union Government has hiked customs duties 19 items, including jet fuel, ACs and refrigerators to curb imports of non-essential goods. The curbing of non-essential imports is part of the five-pronged steps announced by the government to check the widening Current Account Deficit and capital outflows.

10. (a) Medical Council of India

President Ram Nath Kovind has given his assent to promulgate an ordinance that seeks to establish a committee to run the Medical Council of India until Parliament passes legislation to replace the body with a new commission. The National Medical Commission is expected to replace the Medical Council of India as the top medical education regulator in the country. A bill proposing the same is pending in Parliament.
