Twenty-nine accounts of Axis Bank were hacked during April 2013 and May 2013. Out of these, 12 accounts were those of Mumbai policemen. A sum of 13 lakh Rupees has been withdrawn from the ATMs in Greece.
The Mumbai policemen received SMSs about withdrawal of cash from the Axis bank accounts in the Euro currency. The money was withdrawn in Greece by making use of duplicate debit cards. This is called ATM skimming. ATM skimming implies that the criminals make use of hidden electronic items in order to steal information of the card which is inserted in ATM machine.
ATM officials explained that the transactions were reversed with immediate effect and that a committee was also set up to look into the matter.
