Union Communications and IT Minister Kapil Sibal held meeting on 30 March 2011 with mobile operators to discuss the National Broadband Plan that aims at providing high-speed Internet access and e-governance services. In the meeting were present representatives of various telecom companies as well as members of telecom industry bodies like the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) and the association of Unified Telecom Service Providers of India (AUSPI).
Issues related to setting up of the National Optical Fibre Network (NOFN) were discussed in the meeting. COIA mentioned in the meeting that operators had sought judicious use of the Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF) for the network roll out. The body also emphasised that the government’s role should not be limited to providing optical fibre cable (OFC) roll out but should also integrate the wireless access from the OFC endpoint as it is essential to reach the end customer.
The Indian government aims to provide high-speed Internet access and e-governance services cross India by 2014 through this robust network.
The DoT has also made a presentation on NOFN that would provide convenient back haul connectivity. NFON to be rolled out by Department of Telecommunication (DoT) is estimated to cost Rs.20000 crore for providing wireless broadband connection to every village panchayat.
