President Donald Trump of the United States announced Wednesday that reciprocal tariffs on China and India will begin on April 2. According to him, businesses that do not manufacture their goods in the United States will be subject to a tariff under the Trump administration, often a hefty one.

"That's reciprocal, back and forth," Trump stated during the major announcement. "We will tax whatever it is that they tax us."

India, China, and South Korea’s High Tariffs

Donald Trump stated that India imposes auto tariffs above 100%, while China charges double the tariffs on American products compared to what the US charges them. Citing China's alleged involvement in the production of fentanyl, the US also increased duties on Chinese goods on Tuesday, going from 10% to 20%. Additionally, he mentioned that South Korea's tariffs are four times higher than those of the US.

High Taxes on US from Various Countries

Trump named a number of nations, including India, that he claimed imposed "tremendous" taxes on the US. "Have you heard of the European Union, China, Brazil, India, Mexico, and Canada on average? Additionally, Trump said that many other countries impose tariffs on us that are far higher than ours.

US Imposes 25% Tariffs on Canada and Mexico

The declaration follows the United States' decision on Tuesday to implement its punitive 25% tariffs on its neighbors and two of its largest trading partners, Canada and Mexico.

Furthermore, Donald Trump claimed that it was "very unfair" that Mexico and Canada also pay greater tariffs from the US than they do.

Retaliation from Canada

Washington was hit with retaliatory tariffs after imposing 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico. However, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick previously told Fox Business that Trump would soon announce a trade agreement with Canada and Mexico.

Trump explained the reasoning behind reciprocal tariffs, saying that although they would cause "little disturbance," the goal is to restore America's wealth and greatness.
