Veteran trade union leader Sharad Rao passed away on 1 September 2016 in Mumbai. He was 78.
Rao is acknowledged for his role in mobilising the work force in both the organised and unorganised sectors.
About Sharad Rao
• Rao was associated with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).
• He headed several unions including the Hind Mazdoor Sabha, the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply Trust (BEST) Workers’ Union and the Municipal Mazdoor Union.
• He also served as the leader of Mumbai Autorickshawsmen’s union, the largest rickshaw union in the city.
• Rao was once a trusted lieutenant of veteran socialist leader George Fernandes. Rao took over control of trade unions run by Fernandes after the latter moved to national politics.
