Veteran trade union leader Sharad Rao passes away

Sharad RaoVeteran trade union leader Sharad Rao passed away on 1 September 2016 in Mumbai. He was 78.

Rao is acknowledged for his role in mobilising the work force in both the organised and unorganised sectors.

About Sharad Rao

Rao was associated with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).

He headed several unions including the Hind Mazdoor Sabha, the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply Trust (BEST) Workers’ Union and the Municipal Mazdoor Union.

He also served as the leader of Mumbai Autorickshawsmen’s union, the largest rickshaw union in the city.

Rao was once a trusted lieutenant of veteran socialist leader George Fernandes. Rao took over control of trade unions run by Fernandes after the latter moved to national politics.
