The West Bengal government on 23 February 2012 shortlisted two companies the Kolkata-based West Bengal Waste Management Ltd and the Surat-based Gujarat Enviro Protection and Infrastructure for setting up the e-waste dismantling facilities in the State on a public private partnership (PPP) basis.
The two companies would have 50 per cent stake in the projects which is estimated to cost Rupees 12.5 crore each. The State and The Union governments would account for 25% stake each in the project.
E-waste means electrical or electronic devices which are no more of use. E-waste dismantling and recycling refers to dismantling the equipment into various parts such as metal frames, power supplies, circuit boards and plastics. The dismantled parts are recycled to make it useable again.
