Firefighters in drought-stricken Texas are struggling to contain a 16-mile-wide wildfire that has destroyed almost 500 homes. The fire had grown considerably on 5 September 2011 and was now spread over 25,000 acres. Some 25 fires are burning across Texas, which has been hit by high winds generated by Tropical Storm Lee.
The fire, the largest of dozens of wildfires burning throughout the state, is not threatening Austin, but heading toward the opposite way. The fire fighting situation has been worsened by other elements such as dry air, high winds from Tropical Storm Lee and the drought that has been gripping Texas.
About 5,000 people were evacuated from the affected area, and at least 600 of them were staying in shelters.
