Surgeons in Houston, in the last week of March 2011, successfully implanted the world’s first continuous-flow artificial heart in a 55-year-old patient. The continuous-flow artificial heart is a smaller and much more durable alternative to existing artificial hearts.
The surgeons took out the dead heart of the patient at the Texas Heart Institute. The Surgeons then used the device consisting of a pair of turbines cobbled together to mimic the function of the heart’s left and right ventricles.
In 1988, the world’s first left-ventricular assist device was implanted with a continuous-flow pump. The next-generation HeartMate II pump has now been put into 11000 patients.
