Yashpal Sharma, 1983 Cricket World Cup winner, passes away at 66

Yashpal Sharma had played 37 tests, 42 ODIs, and 160 first-class matches. The former Indian batsman was also the second-highest run-getter for the Indian cricket team at the 1983 World Cup.

Yashpal Sharma, a member of the Indian Cricket team that had won the 1983 Cricket World Cup, passed away due to a heart attack on July 13, 2021, at the age of 66. The late cricketer is survived by his wife, two daughters, and a son.

The former Indian batsman had played 37 tests, 42 ODIs, and 160 first-class matches. Yashpal Sharma was also the second-highest run-getter for the Indian cricket team at the 1983 World Cup.

In a glittering cricket career that spanned over the late 70s and the 80s, the former cricketer was regarded as the gifted middle-order batsman.

Yashpal Sharma's best moment at the 1983 World Cup was the stroke-filled half-century in the semifinal against England in the 1983 campaign at Old Trafford.

•  Known for his gutsy attitude, Yashpal Sharma had made his Test debut against England at Lord's in 1979, while his last Test Match was against West Indies in 1983.

•  The former Indian batsman had made his ODI debut against Pakistan in 1978, while the last ODI was against England in Chandigarh in 1985.

•  Yashpal Sharma played 37 Test Matches for India and scored 1606 runs with two centuries and nine fifties to his name at an average of over 33. 

The right-handed batsman played 42 ODIs for India and scored 883 runs respectively. 

•  In Ranji, where Sharma represented three teams including Haryana and Railways, he played 160 matches while scoring 8,933 runs that included 21 centuries with a highest score 201. 

•  After retirement, Yashpal Sharma was involved in different roles with the Indian Cricket Board (BCCI), Punjab, and Haryana cricket. 

•  He also remained India's national cricket team selector from 2003 to 2006 and became a national selector again in 2008.

Cricket fraternity mourns demise of middle-order batsman

The members of the Indian cricket team including Virendra Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh, Venkatesh Prasad, Anil Kumble mourned the demise of the star player and remembered watching him play during the 1983 World Cup. 

The Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Anurag Thakur also extended his condolences via Twitter.

Yahspal Sharma was picked for the Indian Cricket Team to play for the 1983 World Cup and the winning campaign provided Sharma with some of the finest moments of his career. 

In the opening match of the World Cup, Yashpal Sharma top-scored 89 as the team caused West Indies their first defeat in the World Cup match. 

In the 1983 World Cup semi-final against England, the batsman against top-scored with 61- a flick over square leg for six off a near yorker from Bob Willis of England team being a memorable shot.
