Who is Maa Brahmcharini?
Goddess Brahmacharini, daughter of Daksha Prajapati, is one of the most serene and graceful forms of the goddess. Also known as Devi Yogini and Devi Tapasvini, the goddess holds a kamandal in her left hand and a jaapmala in her right. She wears a white saree and blesses devotees with power, strength, wisdom and knowledge.
What is the story and significance of Maa Brahmcharini?
Maa Brahmacharini, the unmarried form of Goddess Parvati, signifies 'tapasya' or 'penance'. According to Hindu scriptures, Goddess Brahmacharini did severe penance to get Lord Shiva as her husband. She spent years on a diet of Bilva leaves, flowers, fruits and leafy vegetables and slept on the floor. She also fasted while staying in open places in scorching summers, harsh winters and stormy rains. Later, she stopped eating and continued her penance without food and water.
When Brahma saw her determination, he bestowed upon her the blessing of becoming the consort of Lord Shiva. But Maa Brahmacharini burned herself alive, hoping that in her next birth, her father would honour her husband.
According to DrikPanchang, devotees should offer jasmine flowers, rice, and sandalwood to Maa Brahmacharini in a Kalash. A special bhog of sugar is also prepared for the goddess during Navratri.
Worshipping her elevates their ethical behaviour and brings about inherent improvements in virtues like penance, renunciation, dispassion, and restraint. Also, by praying to the goddess, one can accomplish all of their goals.
Happy Chaitra Navratri!
