The ways in which driving licenses are obtained in India are set to change once and for all. The biggest of the changes made in the rules to get a driving license is that the aspirants need not visit the regional transport office for the driving test. If this is the case, what exactly is the new method of obtaining a driving license? Here are all your doubts clarified.

Eager to get your driving license? These are the changes in the procedure you need to follow. The government of India has now altered some of the rules to get a driving license. While earlier people interested in getting their driving license needed to take a test in the Regional Transport Office of the government, this is soon going to become a history. Instead, as a part of the new rules, the ones aspiring for a driving license can give tests to private institutions as well. Yes, the government is soon going to authorize the private institutions to conduct the driving tests and issue certificates. Now, it is important to note that this change is going to come in effect from June 1. The notification of the same has been issued.

New rules for getting driving license! 

For private driving training centers

For a private driving training center, there must be at least 1 acre of land. In cases of 4 wheeler motor, an extra 2 acres of land will be needed at the driving center.

Another aspect that a private driving training center needs to take care of is the fact that it must provide appropriate testing facilities.

Phasing out of old vehicles

It is important to note that the new rules have tried hard to focus on the environment. As per the new regulation, over 900,000 old vehicles are going to be phased out. Moreover, people are going to witness stricter regulations on emissions by the cars.

Trainers' qualification:

As per the new rules, the trainers must hold at least a high school diploma or an educational qualification equivalent to it. Moreover, they should be holding a driving experience of at least 5 years. Additionally, as per the new rules, the trainers must know the basics of information technology systems and biometrics.

Training Duration:

The rules for training duration have also been altered. In case of light vehicles, the training must get finished in less than 4 weeks, with at least 29 hours of training. There should be division of the training in a minimum of two sections: practical and theoretical. The theoretical component of the training must comprise of 8 hours. On the other side, the practical component of the training must comprise of 21 hours.

The case of heavy motor vehicle training is different. In case of heavy motor vehicle training, there must be a total of 38 hours of vehicle training. These 38 hours must comprise of 8 hours of theoretical education along with 31 hours of practical vehicle training. The training should get finished in a total of 6 weeks.

The purpose of regulations relating to vehicle training is to foster high standards of education in private driving training centers for the people aspiring to drive heavy or light vehicles.

Fee Structure

The fee structure to obtain a driving license is as follows:

Leaner License: Rs 200

Renewal of Learner License: Rs 200

International License: Rs 1000

Permanent License: Rs 200
