Diwali is one of the most important festivals of the year and is celebrated in families by performing traditional activities together in their homes.

The first day of Diwali is called Dhanvantari Triodasi also called Dhan Theras.

The second day of Diwali is called Narak Chaturdasi. It is the fourteenth lunar day of the dark forthnight of the month of Kartik and the eve of Diwali. On this day Lord Krishna destroyed the demon Narakasur.

The third day of Diwali is the actual Diwali. This is the day when worship for Goddess Lakshmi is performed. People light their houses with lights and diyas.

On the fourth day of Diwali, Goverdhan Pooja is performed.

The fifth day of the diwali is called Bhai Dooj. It is a day dedicated to sisters.

There are many stories related to this festival. Two of them are :

Lord Rama, the lord of wisdom who was exiled by his father king Dashratha for 14 long years alongwith his wife Sita and brother Lakshman, returned to his kingdom this day after his victory of good over evil. it is an occasion in honor of Rama's victory over Ravana.

Other story concerns of a generous and ambitious ruler Bali. In order to check his power, lord Vishnu came to earth as Vamana(dwarf). Vamana approached Bali and asked to give him three pieces of land that he could cover with three strides. Bali thought that the dwarf could not cover much ground and granted his wish. The dwarf turned to lord Vishnu and his three strides covered the Earth, the Skies and the whole Universe and king Bali was send to the underworld. As part of Diwali celebrations, some Hindus remember King Bali.
