What is a Unicorn Startup?

The term 'unicorn startup' describes a private company which has a valuation above 1 billion dollars. The traditional thought is that such an achievement is rare and great. Venture capitalist Aileen Lee popularised the name in the early 2010s combining fantasy's picture of a unicorn and the impossible odds to indicate that statistically speaking few would succeed. These startups have been mainly characterised by their creative and disruptive nature, and exist across all kinds of industries and fields from technology to e-commerce or even finance and health. They grow very quickly indeed, attract huge investment capital from venture capitalists and other investors, and frequently make use of cutting-edge technology, imaginative new business models or clever market strategies.
