Today, the Coast Guard is entrusted with many duties, including search and rescue, maritime law enforcement, marine environmental protection, homeland security, and defence operations.

What is the History of U.S. Coast Guard Day?

The Coast Guard's roots trace back to August 4, 1790, when the Revenue Cutter Service was established by the Treasury Department under the leadership of Alexander Hamilton. This initial fleet of ten cutters was tasked with enforcing the nation's first tariff laws and combating smuggling. 

The Armed Forces Day website mentions: “August 4 is celebrated as Coast Guard Day to honor the establishment on that day in 1790 of the Revenue Cutter Service, forebear of today's Coast Guard, by the Treasury Department. On that date, Congress, guided by Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton; the 1790 Tariff Act President George Washington signed into law, authorized the building of a fleet of ten cutters, whose responsibility would be enforcement of the first tariff laws enacted by Congress under the Constitution.”

These cities have demonstrated exceptional commitment to the well-being of Coast Guard personnel and their families, creating a welcoming environment that enhances morale and operational readiness.
