On Monday, the Ministry of Culture made an announcement stating that the country is nominating the "Maratha Military Landscape" for the UNESCO World Heritage List of 2024-25. A total of 12 components have been included in the nomination.

The Culture Ministry expressed that the "Maratha Military Landscapes" depict the vision of a strong military of the Maratha rulers and the exemplary fortification. The Maratha Military Landscapes express the eventful history of the country. The Salher fort, Khanderi fort, and the Panhala fort are some of the twelve forts nominated.

It was between the 17th and the 19th centuries when the Maratha Military Landscapes developed. The Maratha Military Landscapes depict "an extraordinary fortification and military system envisioned by the Maratha rulers", as said in the statement.

A total of 12 forts belonging to the Maratha empire have been nominated. Take a look at the list of the 12 Maratha forts that have been nominated.

  1. Salher Fort:

The first one on the list is the Salher fort. It is popular for being the site of the largest battle fought by the Marathas. The Salher fort demonstrates the strong military strength of the Marathas.

2. Lohgad Fort:

3. Raigad Fort:

The Raigad is the capital fort of the empire of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The Raigad fort is the heart of the Maratha empire and demonstrates the essence of sovereignty.

 

4. Pratapgad Fort:

The Pratapgad fort is popular for the battle of Pratapgad. The hill-forest fort signifies the Maratha valor.

 

5. Panhala Fort:

The Panhala Fort is an important monument of the Maratha Empire's history. It played an important role in the defense strategies of the Maratha empire.

 

6. Sindhudarg Fort:

The Sindhudarg Fort stands as a beautiful island fort. It demonstrates the extensive and modern maritime engineering skills of the Marathas.

 

7. Shivneri Fort:

The Shivneru Fort is an important fort with respect to the Maratha empire, as this was the place where the respected Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj took birth.

 

8. Khanderi Fort:

The Khanderi fort is an important one as it played the role of a strong naval base. At present, the Khanderi fort is symbolic of the maritime strength of Maratha.

 

9. Rajgad Fort:

The Rajgad Fort is a huge one. The fort is popular for its great size. The Rajgad fort was the capital of the Maratha empire for about twenty years.

 

10. Suvarnadurg Fort:

The Suvarnadurg Fort is the fort that demonstrates the Marathas' maritime abilities. It was an island fort off the coast of Konkan.

 

11. Gingee Fort (Tamil Nadu):

The Gingee Fort stands as a unique and important hill fort. The fort demonstrates the amalgamation of the Dravidian and the Maratha architectural styles.

 

12. Vijaydurg Fort:

The last one on the list is the Vijaydurg fort. The fort stands as a strong symbol of the naval excellence of the Maratha empire.
