Who is N. Rangaswamy?

N. Rangaswamy is one of the most well-known political figures in South India. He is the Chief Minister of Puducherry and the founder of the All India N.R. Congress (AINRC). What makes his story special is that he built his own regional party from scratch and became Chief Minister.

If you follow Indian politics, especially Union Territory politics, the name N. Rangaswamy is one you will come across again and again.

Early Life and Background

N. Rangaswamy was born on 4 August 1950 in Puducherry. His full name is Natesan Krishnasamy Gounder Rangaswamy, and his parents are Natesan Krishnasamy and Panchali.

He rose through the ranks as a politician in the small Union Territory of Puducherry. His family had a simple background with roots in the local community, and it was this upbringing that shaped his approach to grassroots governance and public welfare.

He is known for living a very simple and humble life even after reaching the highest office in Puducherry. He is a bachelor and is widely recognised for his simple lifestyle.

N Rangaswamy: Education

N. Rangaswamy's academic journey is straightforward but purposeful. He completed his Bachelor of Commerce degree from Tagore Arts College in Puducherry and later earned his Bachelor of Laws degree from Dr. Ambedkar Government Law College, Puducherry, in 1977.

After completing his law degree, he worked as a practicing lawyer. Inspired by the late Tamil Nadu leader K. Kamaraj, Rangaswamy quit practicing law to enter politics full-time. That decision changed not just his life but also the political landscape of Puducherry forever.

N. Rangaswamy’s Political Career

In 1990, Rangaswamy entered electoral politics, contesting from the Thattanchavady constituency. The result did not go his way, marking an early setback. A year later, he returned to the same constituency and, in 1991, won the seat, entering the Puducherry Assembly.

That win in 1991 opened the door to a long and remarkable political career. After his 1991 win, he went on to handle portfolios including Agriculture, Co-operation, Tourism, Education, and Public Works. Each of these roles gave him experience across different areas of governance, which proved very useful when he became Chief Minister.

Becoming Chief Minister for the First Time

In 2001, Rangaswamy became the Chief Minister of Puducherry for the first time under the Congress party. He returned to power after the 2006 elections, completing two consecutive terms. During this period, his government introduced several welfare schemes.

During his long tenure as Chief Minister starting in 2001, he introduced developmental reforms in the tiny Union Territory. N. Rangaswamy's tenure as Chief Minister of Puducherry for 8 years is considered the golden era in the history of Puducherry.

The Exit from Congress

Even the most powerful political careers face storms. Following internal strife within the Congress party, Rangaswamy offered his resignation as Chief Minister on 28 August 2008 and was succeeded by Vaithiligam on 4 September 2008.

This was a painful moment for Rangaswamy. The resignation stemmed from deeper grievances rooted in Rangaswamy's eviction as Chief Minister in August 2008, when the Congress high command directed him to step down amid a revolt by several cabinet colleagues. Rather than simply accepting the situation, Rangaswamy chose to fight back but on his own terms.

Founding the AINRC

On 21 January 2011, he resigned his position as a member of the legislative assembly and quit the Congress party. Ahead of the 2011 assembly elections, Rangaswamy announced the formation of a new party, All India N.R. Congress (AINRC), on 7 February 2011.

What happened next was nothing short of remarkable. He holds the record of becoming Chief Minister within just three months of creating his party.

In the assembly elections held in April 2011, AINRC contested in alliance with the AIADMK and won 15 out of the 17 seats it contested. Rangaswamy won from the Kadirkamam constituency and was sworn in as Chief Minister of Puducherry for the third time on 16 May 2011.

Third and Fourth Terms as Chief Minister

In the 2016 assembly elections, AINRC contested alone in all 30 seats. Though Rangaswamy won from the Indira Nagar constituency, the party won only eight seats. Hence, Rangaswamy resigned as Chief Minister on 6 June 2016.

Rather than fading away, Rangaswamy used those five years in the opposition to regroup and strategise. The results were evident when the next election came around.

The AINRC became part of the National Democratic Alliance and allied with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the AIADMK for the 2021 elections. The NDA won 16 seats, with AINRC winning 10 of the 16 seats it contested. Rangaswamy was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Puducherry for the fourth time on 7 May 2021 with the support of the BJP and independents.

Why N. Rangaswamy Matters in Indian Politics

N. Rangaswamy is not just a leader of a small Union Territory. His story is a lesson in political resilience. He lost his first election, rose through the ranks, was pushed out of power, built his own party from the ground up, and came back stronger each time.

In an era where national parties dominate the headlines, Rangaswamy represents the importance of regional identity, local governance, and staying connected to the everyday needs of ordinary people.
