About the Festival:
It was in the year 2015 that the very first Pakke Paga Hornbill festival took place. The aim of the festival was to acknowledge the Nyishi tribal group and its role in safeguarding the hornbills of the Pakke Tiger Reserve (PTR).
Additionally, the purpose of the festival is to create alternative or additional income sources for the area. The objective is to make people aware in India about the Pakke Tiger Reserve as well.
Every year, the festival is celebrated with a specific theme and this year, the theme for the Pakke Paga Festival is "Domutoh Domutoh, Paga hum Domutoh" which literally translates to "Let Our Hornbills Remain". The theme is set in the Nyishi language.
A bit about the Pakke Tiger Reserve:
The Pakke Tiger Reserve is situated in Arunachal Pradesh in the East Kameng district of the state. The area is surrounded by National Parks and Forests. For instance, in its south lie the Nameri National Park and Tiger Reserve of Assam. Additionally, the Tenga Reserve Forest is situated to the North of the Pakke Tiger Reserve, and the Doimara Reserve Forest is situated on its West.
The Pakke Tiger Reserve is located North of the Brahmaputra River. It is situated in the transition zone between the forests of Arunachal Pradesh and the plains of Assam.
The area is covered with tropical evergreen and semi-evergreen forest vegetation.
As far as the species are concerned, it has a rich species diversity. The area creates a transition zone between Malayan and Indian ecoregions.
At the Pakke Tiger Reserve, one may find leopards, clouded leopards, elephants, and tigers.
Additionally, those who love the flora will also have a great time at the place, with Sterculia alata, Polyalthia simiaum, Ailanthus grandis, Duabanga grandiflor, and Pterospermum acerifolium and more delighting their eyes.
