Hanuman Jayanti 2024: Hanuman Janmotsav, also called Hunuman Jayanti, is a Hindu festival celebrating the birth of the Hindu deity Hanuman, one of the protagonists of the Ramayana. In most northern states, the festival is observed on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Chaitra Chaitra Purnima. It usually falls in March or April of the English calendar .

Who is Lord Hanuman?

Hanuman is a vanara (monkey), born to Kesari and Anjana. Hanuman is sometimes referred to as the celestial son of the wind god Vayu. His mother, Anjana, was an apsara who was born on earth due to a curse. His father, Kesari, was the son of Brihaspati, the king of a region called Sumeru, which was situated close to the kingdom of Kishkindha near Hampi in the modern-day Karnataka district of Vijayanagara, according to the Valmiki Ramayana. It is said that Anjana prayed fervently for Shiva to conceive a child for twelve years. Pleased with their devotion, Shiva granted them the son they sought.

Hanuman's life changed dramatically when he met Lord Rama, the Hindu deity Vishnu, in his seventh incarnation. He turned into a devoted follower of Lord Rama and was instrumental in his mission to save Rama's beloved wife Sita from the grasp of the demon king Ravana.

Hanuman helped Lord Rama and his allies fight Ravana's army with his unshakable devotion and unmatched bravery. He proved his strength by carrying a whole mountain by himself in order to bring a herb that could save the life of Lord Rama's brother Lakshmana, who had sustained severe injuries in battle.
