Michael Richard Lynch is a distinguished British-Irish entrepreneur known for his role in founding multiple innovative technology companies. Best known as the co-founder of Autonomy Corporation, Lynch also spearheaded the launch of Invoke Capital and played an instrumental part in establishing Darktrace, a cybersecurity pioneer, through Invoke. With a career marked by diverse leadership positions, Lynch has lent his expertise in an advisory capacity to various organisations.
However, Lynch, often referred to as Europe's answer to Bill Gates for his technology vision, recently vanished under dire circumstances. The entrepreneur was among twenty-two passengers, including two Americans and a Canadian national, aboard the luxurious Bayesian superyacht when it sank off Sicily's treacherous coast amid unexpectedly violent seas. The group faced perilous conditions as the storm swiftly enveloped their vessel, shrouding any hopes for rescue.

Who is Mike Lynch?
Mike Lynch co-founded Autonomy, a pioneering software firm in the UK tech scene, in the mid-1990s. His contributions to enterprise were recognised in 2006 when he was awarded an OBE (Order of the British Empire). In 2011, he was appointed to the science and technology council of then-Prime Minister David Cameron. Lynch was also elected as a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2008 and the Royal Society in 2014.
However, his career faced significant challenges when he was accused of inflating sales, misleading regulators, and deceiving Hewlett-Packard (HP), which acquired Autonomy for $11.1 billion in 2011. First charged in 2018, Lynch faced 15 counts of fraud in a US trial but was cleared of all charges in June this year.
Born in Ireland on 16 June 1965, Lynch grew up near Chelmsford in Essex. His mother, a nurse from County Tipperary, and his father, a firefighter from County Cork, Ireland, influenced his early life. At age 11, Lynch won a scholarship to Bancroft's School in Woodford. He later attended Christ's College, Cambridge, where he studied Natural Sciences before pursuing a PhD in artificial neural networks under the supervision of Peter Rayner, director of studies in engineering at Christ's College. His thesis was titled Adaptive Techniques in Signal Processing and Connectionist Models. Lynch also completed a research fellowship in adaptive pattern recognition.

What Happened in Sicily?
Mike Lynch and his daughter, Hannah, are among six people reported missing after the Perini Navi-built 56-metre (184 ft) superyacht Bayesian sank off the coast of Sicily on 19 August 2024. His wife, Angela Bacares, was confirmed to be among the fifteen people rescued following the incident, while the body of one crew member has been recovered. The yacht was chartered by Revtom Limited, an Isle of Man-registered company reportedly owned by Bacares.
According to witnesses, the yacht, carrying twenty-two people, was struck by a powerful storm in the early hours of 19 August 2024. The storm caused the yacht's mast to snap in half, leaving the vessel unbalanced. The yacht was anchored off the coast near Porticello port when it was hit by the waterspout, as reported by Giornale di Sicilia.
