Early Life and Education
Chew was bred in the Singapore classroom, with strong educational values learnt during schooling at Hwa Chong Institution, an elite school with high academic demands. Professional Career
Chew started his professional career working as an investment banker for two years in London for Goldman Sachs. He later moved on to venture capital at DST Global, where he made significant contributions to investments in major companies such as JD.com and Alibaba, though in relatively minor investments. More importantly, he was part of the early investing team for ByteDance in 2013.
By 2015, Chew had joined Xiaomi as its Chief Financial Officer. Later on, he became the President of International Business. He helped lead Xiaomi through its public listing in 2018, which was one of the largest tech IPOs in history.
In 2021, March, Chew was named the CFO at ByteDance and then a few months later took over as TikTok's chief executive. That was when this company was faced with much opposition from United States lawmakers and was in many arguments over data protection and its connectivity to China.
