ARIIA Ranking 2021: Minister of State for Education Subhas Sarkar has released the Atal Rankings of Institutions on Innovation Achievements (ARIIA). The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has been recognised as the Most Innovative Educational Institute in India for the third consecutive year in the ARIIA. IIT Madras is in the CFTIs (Centrally Funded Technical Institutions)/Central University/Institute of National Importance (Technical) category.
As many as 1,438 higher education institutions (HEIs) (including all IITs, NITs, and IISc, among others) participated in the third edition of ARIIA rankings as compared to 674 HEIs during last year.
ARIIA Ranking 2021 Technical Universities
Among government technical universities (state-run and deemed), Panjab University (PU) has been ranked number one followed by Delhi Technological University and Netaji Subhas University of Technology bagging the second and third positions, respectively. College of Engineering Pune (COEP) topped ARIIA 2021 in the government and government-aided technical colleges category.
Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) topped among private technical universities for innovation as per the rankings. In the list of private technical institutions or colleges, GH Raisoni College of Engineering, Maharashtra holds the top spot.
ARIIA Ranking 2021 Non-Technical Universities
Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) topped among non-technical Institutes of National Importance and CFIs and Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India is best in the non-technical general category.
ARIIA Ranking 2021 - Categories
The ARIIA Ranking 2021 will be awarded in 9 different categories. These would include the following:
- Centrally funded technical institutions ( iits, nits, etc)
- State universities
- State standalone technical colleges
- Private universities
- Private standalone technical colleges
- Non-technical government
- Private universities and institutions.

According to the official press release, a total of 1438 institutions, including all IITs, NITs, and IISc participated in ARIIA rankings. Last year, the ARIIA Ranking were limited to 674 HEIs. This means that the participation of institutes has doubled for ARIIA Ranking this year and is nearly at 4 times as compared the inaugural edition.
ARIIA Rankings
ARIIA Rankings lists top universities and colleges in India on parameters of innovation such as patent filing and registered students and faculty start-ups. In addition to these, the rankings also recognize efforts put in institutions to fund generation by incubated startups, specialised infrastructure created by institutions to promote innovation and entrepreneurship, etc.
Highlights from Last Year’s Ranking
With the Atal Innovation Ranking for Institutions being announced today for this year, it is also the right time to look back at what the rankings looked like in 2020. Last year, IIT Madras topped the rankings of best centrally funded institutions. In the category of private institutions, Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology, or KIIT, Odisha has emerged as winners. Another important highlight of the ARIIA 2020 rankings was the special prize category for women-only higher educational institutions. Avinashilingam Institute For Home Science And Higher Education For Women and Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University for Women were awarded against ARIIA women-only higher educational institutions.
