BITS Design School, Mumbai: The Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani (BITS Pilani) launched the BITS Design School in Mumbai to combine technology, business, and entrepreneurship with the creative arts. BITSDES will kickstart with a four-year Bachelor of Design (Honours) programme in the academic year 2024-25 in August. Admission for design courses will open on February 26, 2024.
The Design School aims to nurture a new generation of future-ready design professionals poised to contribute actively to India's aspiration to be a developed nation by 2047. BITSDES will commence its first academic session in August 2024 from an interim campus in Powai, Mumbai.
BITSDES will collaborate with Aalto University, Finland, and the School of Design, RMIT, Melbourne. As per reports, the Design School comprises an investment of Rs 1500 crore and spans 63 acres in Mumbai.
What Courses Are Offered By BITSDES?
The permanent campus for BITS Design School is expected to be operational in early 2025. In the academic year 2024–2025, BITSDES will begin with a four-year Bachelor of Design (Honors) program. This will be followed by a Master’s program and a Faculty Development program for Design Educators.
The five specialisation programs offered by BITS Design School include Physical Product Design, Digital Product Design (UI/UX), Human Centered Design, Experience Design, and Visual Design. The institution mentioned that the expertise of prominent figures in design, such as Don Norman and Sandy Speicher, will be beneficial to BITSDES.
Students can select from five streams for specialisation in the second year of the program. Admission for design courses will open on February 26, 2024, and will be taught by renowned Indian professors trained at the world's best design schools as well as visiting faculty from around the globe.

Speaking at the event, Chancellor of BITS Pilani, Kumar Mangalam Birla said that design is increasingly pivotal in addressing the complexities of the new age. He emphasised how design contributes to shaping the future of the way businesses approach problem-solving and innovation in a variety of industries, including manufacturing, services, retail, and technology.
The Chancellor added that BITS Design School will embrace areas where design can have a beneficial impact on people, businesses, and the globe. Moreover, the school will be able to accomplish these goals because of its long history of academic excellence and transdisciplinary thinking.
