The Central Board of Secondary Education has decided to restore the communicative English and Sanskrit subjects for the students of classes 9 and 10 as per the National Education Policy. Check complete details here.

The Central Board of Secondary Education has decided to restore the communicative English and Sanskrit subjects for the students of classes 9 and 10 as per the National Education Policy. As per media reports, the Communicative English subject will be a part of the class 9 curriculum from 2022-23 and Sanskrit will be introduced in class 10 from 2023-24.

English and Sanskrit were a part of the curriculum at two levels in secondary school until they were discontinued in 2018-19. English was taught at two levels which are Communicative and Core. The communicative level involved content on communication skills and day-to-day language usage while the core focused on literature and writing.

Subjects as per NEP 2020

According to media reports, the CBSE Director Joseph Emmanuel wrote to the principals of CBSE Schools stating that as per the recommendations of the National Education Policy 2020 regarding the availability of all subjects and corresponding assessments at two levels as per the needs and interests of the students the CBSE is planning to offer English and Sanskrit at two levels from the 2022-21 academic year in class 9 and 2023-24 academic year for class 10 students.

CBSE will offer a Communicative based curriculum which was used to offer in those languages until 2018. The CBSE director added that this has been done as per NEP 2020. He also stated that the NEP stresses using an approach to learn and highlight the importance of real-life context and enable the students to apply their knowledge in real-life scenarios and the communicative approach to languages will develop the competence of the students to communicate in the largest language enhancing the focus on real-life situations.
