The Ministry of Human Resource and Development has carried out several amendments in the Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship scheme. The same was announced on Thursday by the HRD Ministry saying that the modifications have been made to boost research in India. According to the amendments, students of all recognized universities except for IISC/IITs/NITs/CF IITs/IISERs/IIEST) will be eligible for the scholarship programme. The GATE score requirement for the same has been reduced to 650 from 750 and the minimum CGPA required is 8 or equivalent.
HRD Minister, Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ has said that there will be two means of entry - Direct and Lateral. Under the Lateral entry scheme, students pursuing their PhD in PMRF granting institutions (completed 12 0r 24 months as required) can apply to become a fellow. He said that the top 25 NITs as per NIRF ranking can also become PMRF granting institutions. He said that the MHRD is also developing a ‘Reasearch and Innovation Division’ to encourage research and will be headed by a Director supervising research of various organisations under MHRD.
The Union HRD Minister also added that candidates for the PMRF scheme will be selected through a rigorous selection process and their performance will be suitably reviewed by means of a national convention.
Candidates will be able to apply for the PMRF scheme through direct or lateral entry starting academic year 2020-21. The scheme was launched in 2018 and has been designed to improve the quality of research in the country. Institutes eligible to offer PMRF include IITS/IISC, Bengaluru/IISERs and certain selected NITs and Central Universities.
