The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) have expanded their research collaborations with IBM, with a focus on emerging technologies including artificial intelligence, quantum computing and next-generation computing systems.

Under the expanded collaboration, IIT Bombay and IBM will work together on areas such as sovereign AI, Indic language models, multimodal AI, AI infrastructure and knowledge retrieval. The partnership builds on the research association between the institute and IBM that began in 2018.

A key focus will be improving AI systems for Indian languages. Researchers will explore methods to adapt and optimise AI models so they can support multiple Indian languages more efficiently. The collaboration will also examine multimodal AI applications in software programming education, human-AI interaction and intelligent operations across hybrid cloud environments.

IISc and IBM, which began their research collaboration in 2021, will also expand their work into newer areas. Their research will cover agentic AI systems, AI applications and the development of algorithms for quantum computing.

Time-Series Foundation Models

The partnership will explore agentic AI workflows designed to improve the coordination of tasks across hybrid cloud environments. Researchers will also work on lightweight time-series foundation models based on IBM’s Granite model family. These models will be explored for energy-related applications, including forecasting, detecting unusual patterns, analysing electricity loads and improving energy efficiency.

The expanded research programme builds on work previously carried out by IIT Bombay, IISc and IBM in areas such as artificial intelligence, hybrid cloud computing, distributed systems and quantum computing.

According to the institutes, the collaborations will also provide students and researchers with opportunities to work on industry-focused challenges. The partnerships are expected to promote interdisciplinary research and create opportunities for developing new technologies in advanced computing and artificial intelligence.

The latest initiatives will bring together academic researchers and industry experts to explore applications of emerging technologies while supporting research and training for the next generation of scientists and technology professionals.
