Kerala State Literacy Mission: 2050 take literacy exam in state capital

Approximately 2050 candidates from which 5 were in their 80’s appeared for the Aksharashree literacy exam which was conducted by the Kerala State Literacy Mission.

Approximately 2050 candidates from which 5 were in their 80’s appeared for the Aksharashree literacy exam which was conducted by the Kerala State Literacy Mission. Sumathi Ammal and Dharani, both in their 80’s were the senior-most candidates who appeared for the examination which was conducted as part of the Aksharashree project. The Kerala State Literacy Mission conducted the Aksharashree Project to find the illiterate citizens in the capital city and make them a part of the Missions continuing education programme or equivalency courses.

Out of the total number of candidates who appeared for the Aksharashree literacy programme five were above 80. Along with Sumathi Ammal and Dharani, the others in the above-mentioned age group included Kamalamma from Thiruvallam and Subhdramma of Thrikkanapuram ages 83 and Sarada from Aarannoor aged 82.

The youngest candidate to appear for the examination was Thaslima of Perunthannu aged 21. The examination was in the form if Mikavutsavam which is separate from the usually conducted literacy examinations. About 2050 learners from the 74 corporation wards appeared for the examination.

According to the authorities at the Kerala State Literacy Mission Authority in the Mikavutsavam to be held later close to 697 learners from 26 wards in Vattiyurkavu will be appearing. The examination which is conducted for 100 marks tests the writing, reading and mathematical skills of the candidates appearing.

The Kerala model of literacy has been of national inspiration with the National Literacy Mission showing an interest in the Kerala State Literacy Mission Authorities model of Literacy. Recently, the National Literacy Mission invited the state authority to share its experience on Adult Education during the international literacy day celebration held in New Delhi.
